At a glance

This summary is only a guide. The complete Terms control if this summary differs from them.

  • ChessCue is for personal chess learning. It lets you play only against Stockfish and never against another ChessCue user.
  • You must be at least 18 years old to create an account or use account features.
  • You are responsible for your account, submitted content, fair play outside ChessCue, and how you use coaching output.

Registration and personal access

You must be at least 18 years old to create an account or use account features. By selecting the acceptance checkbox and creating an account, or by accepting an updated version in the application, you confirm that you meet this requirement and agree to the version of these Terms presented to you.

ChessCue is offered only to natural persons for their own personal, noncommercial use. You may not create or use an account for a company, employer, club, school, client, or other third party.

You must provide accurate information and keep your account details up to date. Keep your credentials secure and do not share, sell, or transfer your account. You are responsible for activity under your account and must tell us promptly if you believe it has been used without permission.

Personal learning and fair play

ChessCue is strictly a personal chess learning service. It does not match you with another player and does not offer multiplayer games. Games started inside ChessCue are played only against Stockfish.

When you play elsewhere against another person, all moves must be your own. Do not use ChessCue, its AI coach, Stockfish analysis, suggested moves, voice features, or other assistance during an active game against another person, during a tournament, or in any event or examination where outside assistance is prohibited.

You may use ChessCue for games against Stockfish, post game review, analysis of completed games, and other practice that the applicable platform or event rules permit. You are responsible for the rules that apply to you. ChessCue may restrict coaching or analysis access when needed to protect fair play, and ChessCue is not responsible for action another platform or event operator takes against you.

Acceptable use

Use ChessCue lawfully, respectfully, and only for its intended personal chess learning features.

  • Do not use ChessCue to break the law, harm another person, or infringe someone else's rights.
  • Do not harass, threaten, defame, deceive, impersonate, or discriminate against another person, and do not submit unlawful, abusive, or obscene content.
  • Do not transmit malware, harmful code, spam, phishing material, or content intended to disrupt ChessCue or another service.
  • Do not interfere with ChessCue, access another person's account, probe nonpublic systems, or bypass authentication, security controls, usage quotas, or other technical restrictions.
  • Do not use bots, crawlers, scrapers, automated browsers, scripts, or similar tools to access or interact with ChessCue unless ChessCue has expressly authorized that use. Do not bypass the interfaces we provide, authentication, security controls, quotas, or rate limits.
  • Do not reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, copy, mirror, or attempt to extract source code, model components, prompts, credentials, or nonpublic data, except to the limited extent applicable law does not allow this restriction.
  • Do not use ChessCue, ChessCue content, or coaching output to train, test, or benchmark an AI model, chess engine, dataset, or competing product without prior written permission.
  • Do not submit content that you do not have the right to share or that contains unnecessary sensitive personal data.
  • Do not use ChessCue or its output to provide professional advice or to make decisions that require reliable legal, medical, financial, or safety expertise.

Chess content and submissions

You keep the rights you have in games, positions, messages, notes, voice input, and other content you submit. You give ChessCue a worldwide, nonexclusive, royalty free license to host, reproduce, process, display, transmit, and modify that content only as needed to provide, secure, debug, evaluate, and improve the service you request. This license includes sublicensing those limited rights to providers acting for ChessCue.

This license lasts while your content is stored for the service and ends when it is deleted, except for copies retained for legal, security, backup, or dispute purposes. Improving the service under this license does not authorize ChessCue to use your content to train general purpose AI models unless ChessCue separately asks for and receives your permission.

You are responsible for having permission to submit imported games and other content. Do not submit another person's private information unless you have a lawful reason and permission to do so.

AI coaching

AI coaching is optional. By using it, you confirm that you are at least 18 years old. ChessCue may send chess context, prompts, saved coaching context, and voice input you choose to provide to Google Gemini to produce coaching responses.

AI output may be incomplete, inaccurate, or unsuitable for your position. Treat it as general chess learning assistance, verify important claims, and use your own judgment. ChessCue does not promise that AI output will be available, correct, unique, or fit for a particular purpose.

ChessCue does not promise any rating gain, title, norm, tournament result, or other performance improvement. Coaching and evaluations may not account for every legal move, time control, playing condition, or later change in chess theory.

To the extent permitted by law and subject to third party rights, you may use the AI output ChessCue provides to you for personal, noncommercial purposes. AI output may not be unique, and other users may receive similar output. You receive no rights in third party content that may appear in an output.

ChessCue uses Google Gemini under ChessCue's provider agreement. You do not contract directly with Google merely by using ChessCue, but you must not use the AI features in a way that would cause ChessCue to violate provider safety, acceptable use, or content restrictions. The Privacy Policy describes how requests are processed.

Third party services

User facing integrations may include Google sign in, Google Gemini, Chess.com, and Lichess. Those independent services may have their own terms, policies, account requirements, and availability. The Privacy Policy identifies the providers that process personal data for ChessCue.

When you connect an account or request an import, you authorize ChessCue to perform the requested action. ChessCue does not control independent services and is not responsible for their content, availability, or practices.

Subscriptions, payments, and withdrawal

ChessCue may offer free trials and paid plans. Before purchase, the checkout will show the price, currency, taxes where applicable, included features, usage limits, billing period, trial terms, and renewal terms. Unless the checkout states otherwise, a paid subscription renews automatically for the same billing period until cancelled, and a trial converts to a paid subscription at the disclosed price unless cancelled before it ends.

Lemon Squeezy is the merchant of record for paid plans. When you complete checkout, you purchase the subscription from Lemon Squeezy under the purchase terms and statutory information presented there. Lemon Squeezy handles charges, currency conversion, tax, invoices, renewals, cancellations, refunds, and chargebacks. These Terms continue to govern your use of ChessCue.

You may cancel future renewals at any time through the Lemon Squeezy customer portal linked from ChessCue or through another cancellation control identified at checkout. Contractual cancellation stops future renewal and takes effect at the end of the current paid billing period unless the checkout terms or applicable law provide otherwise. Lemon Squeezy will confirm the cancellation. Deleting your ChessCue account does not by itself cancel a Lemon Squeezy subscription, so cancel the subscription before deleting the account.

If you are a consumer, you may have a statutory right of withdrawal and statutory remedies when a digital service is not supplied or does not conform to the contract. The required withdrawal instructions, model form, and electronic withdrawal function will be provided by Lemon Squeezy or ChessCue where applicable law requires them. A statutory right of withdrawal is separate from contractual cancellation of future renewals. Nothing in these Terms restricts either right.

Lemon Squeezy handles refund requests under its Buyer Terms, the checkout terms, and applicable law. Failed or reversed payments may result in loss of paid access after applicable notices and payment retries.

A price change does not alter a billing period you already paid for. We or Lemon Squeezy will give advance notice before a higher price applies to a renewal and will request consent where law requires it. You may cancel before the higher price takes effect.

ChessCue content and intellectual property

ChessCue and its licensors own the service, software, branding, design, and materials provided by ChessCue, except for content supplied by users or independent providers. These Terms give you a limited, revocable, nonexclusive, nontransferable right to use ChessCue for your personal, noncommercial use while your account is permitted to access it.

If you send feedback or suggestions, you allow ChessCue to use them without restriction or payment, provided that doing so does not identify you publicly without your permission.

Service and Terms changes

We may change ChessCue for a valid reason, including compliance with law, security, abuse prevention, technical or provider changes, interoperability, service capacity, or improving usability or performance. A service change will not impose an extra charge solely because of that change, and we will explain the change clearly where required.

If a change materially impairs access to or use of a continuously supplied paid feature, we will provide reasonable advance notice on a durable medium. The notice will describe the change, when it takes effect, and any right to keep using an unchanged version or to end the affected contract without charge. Mandatory rights for changes to digital products remain unaffected.

We may update these Terms when ChessCue changes or when legal, security, or operational requirements change. For a material change, we will normally provide at least 30 days of advance notice by email or another durable medium. We may use a shorter period when an urgent legal or security reason requires it and will explain the reason where permitted.

Every published version is preserved in the terms archive with its version and effective date. We will ask registered users to accept a material updated version before continuing to use account features. If you do not agree, you may stop using ChessCue and cancel any future subscription renewal before the updated Terms take effect. Changes do not apply retroactively to a dispute that arose before their effective date.

Service reliability and data loss

ChessCue may experience maintenance, outages, security incidents, provider failures, or technical errors. We do not promise uninterrupted or error free operation, but this does not limit any statutory right to conformity, repair, price reduction, termination, or damages.

ChessCue is not a backup service. Keep an independent copy of games, notes, conversations, and other content that you need. Content may be lost because of a technical failure, an account action, a retention period described in the Privacy Policy, or a lawful enforcement action.

Any liability for an outage or data loss is governed by the liability section below.

Service limitations

Chess analysis, imported data, AI responses, and other output can contain errors. You are responsible for deciding whether to rely on them and for reviewing a position yourself.

Descriptions of features, plans, and limits form part of the service agreement only to the extent presented as binding at signup or checkout. Nothing in this section excludes statutory rights for a digital service that is not supplied or does not conform to the contract.

Liability

ChessCue is liable without limitation for damage caused by intent or gross negligence, for injury to life, body, or health caused by a negligent or intentional breach of duty, under the German Product Liability Act, for a fraudulently concealed defect, and under any guarantee ChessCue expressly gives.

For slight negligence outside the preceding cases, ChessCue is liable only for breach of a material contractual obligation. A material contractual obligation is one whose performance makes the contract possible and on whose performance you may ordinarily rely. Liability in that case is limited to foreseeable loss typical for this contract at the time the contract was accepted.

Except in the cases described above, liability for slight negligence is excluded. Mandatory statutory rights concerning digital products and any other liability that the law does not allow us to restrict remain unaffected.

Where ChessCue is liable for loss of data, liability is limited to the reasonable cost of restoring the data that would have been incurred if you had kept reasonable backups. This limitation does not apply to the cases of unlimited liability described in the first paragraph.

Account and content enforcement

ChessCue may investigate suspected violations, remove or restrict content, and suspend or limit features or an account when we reasonably believe this is necessary to enforce these Terms, protect users or providers, prevent fraud or security harm, respond to nonpayment, or comply with law or a valid official request.

We will act proportionately. Where reasonable, we will give notice and an opportunity to respond before a restriction takes effect. We may act immediately where delay could cause harm, compromise an investigation, violate law, or create a security risk. You may ask us to review an enforcement decision by contacting legal@chesscue.com.

We may access, preserve, and disclose account information or content when reasonably necessary to investigate misuse, secure ChessCue, respond to support, establish or defend legal claims, or comply with a valid legal request. The Privacy Policy describes how personal data is handled.

We may terminate an account for a serious or repeated violation, repeat copyright infringement, unresolved nonpayment, or discontinuation of ChessCue. Refunds and continued access after termination are governed by mandatory law and the applicable Lemon Squeezy purchase terms.

After termination, your permission to use ChessCue ends. Export content you wish to keep before deleting your account or before an announced termination takes effect. Deletion, retention, and copies kept for legal or security purposes are handled as described in the Privacy Policy.

General terms

These Terms govern use of ChessCue. The Privacy Policy explains how personal data is handled. Lemon Squeezy's Buyer Terms and the checkout terms govern the purchase transaction, payment, tax, cancellation, and refund administration. If documents conflict, the more specific terms control their subject matter, and mandatory law always prevails.

If any provision is unenforceable, it will be limited only to the extent necessary and the remaining provisions stay effective. A failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. You may not assign or transfer your account or these Terms. ChessCue may transfer these Terms as part of a merger, restructuring, financing, sale, or transfer of the service, subject to applicable law and any right you have to end the contract.

ChessCue may provide legal notices through the service or by email to the address associated with your account. Delay or failure caused by an event reasonably outside ChessCue's control does not create liability beyond what applicable law requires.

Responsible entity, governing law, and disputes

The responsible legal entity, legal form, registration details, and business address will be added to this section before this version is marked for public release. Until those details are added, legal questions can be sent to legal@chesscue.com.

These Terms and the contractual relationship concerning ChessCue are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany. If you are a consumer and have your habitual residence in another country, this choice of law does not deprive you of mandatory protections that apply under the law of that country.

Courts have jurisdiction as determined by applicable law. Nothing in these Terms requires a consumer to bring a claim outside a court available to that consumer under mandatory law. Before starting formal proceedings, you may contact legal@chesscue.com to seek an informal solution. This is voluntary and does not suspend a legal deadline or restrict access to a court.
