AI chess coach

An AI chess coach that explains the position, not just the engine line

ChessCue is an AI chess coach that runs in your browser. You play against a computer opponent while the coach explains candidate moves, warns you about blunders, and answers your questions by chat, or by voice on Club and Grandmaster. Every explanation is grounded in Stockfish analysis of the position on your board.

How the coach works during a game

Start a game against the ChessCue opponent at a level that suits you. At any point you can ask the coach what the position is about, which moves deserve a look, or why a plan works. The coach reads the current board and the Stockfish evaluation, then explains the idea in words instead of handing you a bare engine line. On the Free plan, the coach joins one blitz game a day and answers up to 20 questions in it.

You decide how much help you get. Ask for a hint, a short list of candidate moves, or a full explanation. With Socratic coaching turned on, the coach guides you with questions so you find the move yourself, and it only reveals more when you ask for it.

Guardian Angel catches blunders before they land

With Guardian Angel on, the coach checks your move before it is played. If the move drops material or walks into a tactic, the game pauses and you get another look.

On the Free plan, Guardian Angel gives you the warning. Club and Grandmaster also explain what the danger is, so you learn to see it yourself next time.

Devil's Advocate lets the mistake happen, then shows you why

Some lessons stick better when you feel the consequence. Devil's Advocate lets a weak move through, then roasts the idea and shows exactly how your opponent can punish it. It is available on Club and Grandmaster.

Coaching continues after the game

On Club and Grandmaster, you can review the game with the same coach when it ends. Ask about the turning points, replay the critical moments, and practice the positions where you missed a better move. Link your Chess.com or Lichess account to review those games in the same place.

Who ChessCue is for

ChessCue suits players who want to understand their games, not only see an evaluation bar.

  • Beginners who want the reasoning behind moves, not only the moves
  • Club players who keep losing games to the same kinds of mistakes
  • Returning players who want a patient sparring partner with explanations on demand
  • Anyone who would rather talk through a position than read engine lines

What an AI coach can and cannot do

An AI coach is there whenever you want to play, never tires of the same question, and bases its explanations on engine analysis of the actual position.

It does not replace a human trainer who has followed your chess for years, builds a full opening repertoire with you, or prepares you for a specific opponent. A human coach can handle long term direction, while ChessCue covers daily games and quick answers.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI chess coach?

An AI chess coach is software that explains chess positions and gives feedback on your moves in natural language. ChessCue combines Stockfish evaluations with a language model, so you can ask why a move is good or bad and get an answer in plain words.

Is ChessCue free?

Yes. The Free plan includes unlimited play against the computer, with the latest 50 games kept in this browser, Stockfish analysis, Guardian Angel warnings, and one coached blitz game per day with up to 20 questions. Club and Grandmaster add voice coaching, full game reviews, Chess.com and Lichess import, and more coaching messages.

Does the coach just tell me the best move?

Only if you ask. You can request a hint, candidate moves, or a full explanation, and Socratic coaching guides you with questions instead of answers.

What rating is ChessCue for?

The computer opponent ranges from about 500 to about 2000 Elo, and the coach adjusts its explanations to your level. On Club and Grandmaster you can base that level on your linked Chess.com or Lichess rating. Otherwise it comes from your ChessCue games.

Do I need to install anything?

No. ChessCue runs in the browser on desktop, tablet, and mobile.
